Haha, you tell 'em Bill.
If we do keep Weber, making a trade with Nashville to do so, and we don't get Doan, what other options for forward will we pursue? (for arguments sake, I am assuming that Read and Voracek would be involved in that trade which is obviously pure speculation)
??? Giroux Hartnell
Schenn - Briere - Simmonds
??? Couturier - Wellwood
Rinaldo/Sestito - Talbot - Fedotenko
If we must make a trade for Weber, clearly we don't have enough to trade for another forward, right? |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Doan, Carbomb - bmeltzer
You know what? I should have just left this off at "Why should anyone care what Dan Carcillo has to say?" It's irrelevant. Moving forward, let's get back to the current team or least to discussing former members of the team who have earned the right to have their pronouncements taken seriously.
bingo.
every time i read or hear his name, i think of homer's words about the acquisition: "the fans are gonna' love him". didn't really happen while he was here. certainly don't love him now. i wonder if he's buddies with adam burrish. |

Clearly there is something happening between the Flyers and Preds. If there was simply silence between the two teams there would be a lot more ambient chatter and speculation. I believe the deal is done and both sides are content with the outcome. I think Holmgren has stepped back and is allowing Poile to bring this forward in the manner that serves the best interest of the Nashville faithful.
My long term stretch of a guess is the one I have been holding for a good while. I don't think JVR was an attractive piece to Nashville. I think Schenn and Schenn has always been the offer for Weber and my intuition tells me that the final deal will be very close to the last offer Holmgren made before the offer sheet was dropped.

Weber situation is interesting. I dont think Nashville has a financial decision. They have a hockey one.
If they match the offer, the team may not be better off. One, Weber clearly wants out. Two, a big reason it has come to this is the new CBA. Weber IMO would have waited a year and then bolted. So they were in a mode already of thinking about the future.
My thought is a trade is better off for Nashville. Four picks is a ton, but if they can get two or three high picks plus players it is a win.
Since the Flyers are going for the gold, they may be reluctant to give up a player like Coby or schenn. Normally, this would be done but the circumstances here are really unique. If i am the Flyers, I give up their first rounder just drafted, Cousins, Mezaros, Voracek, plus the picks (the first rounder plus maybe seconds, thirds).
What the Flyers are shooting for is a cup run over the next two years. After that, my guess is that the younger players may seek more money and things could get tight. If they do the deal, they wont have a lot of cheap talent coming up (eg Read) and may have to rely on a lot of cheap veterans. Still, a core of Giroux Coots and Weber would be sweet.

The funny thing is, that while Nashville must file paperwork to match the offer, to decline to match they don't have to do anything.
I have no idea if the Preds & Flyers are talking or not. I suspect that there has been some discussion, but both teams have been extremely quiet. Usually if there's talks, especially on the Flyers end, something leaks out.
Outside of that, any guess at a trade is just that. I doubt if there is a deal worked out that it would be a huge bargain for the Flyers and almost certainly involve a young player that we as fans want to stay. |

Carbomb is ridiculous. I put zero stock in him.
I also think all of the Doan talk yesterday was getting a little ahead of ourselves.
Bill, I had one very random question: with the CBA changing and likely outlawing these long term deals, should we/can we lock up and extend G even though he has 2 more years before he is even an RFA. I am sure we dont know the market etc. but don't we want to ensure now that he is a flyer for life so we never have to think about it?? |

Giroux's not eligible for an extension until July 1st, 2013 under the current CBA. |

Meanwhile, Shea Weber was visiting the Flyers and Frank managed to miss it.
When will we see the stories about Frank's debauchery, they way that the media harped about Carter and Richards? - Jsaquella
So true. On Richards and Carters turf down in Sea Isle as well... |

Four days in. The longer this goes the more confident I get. We have pretty much discussed every option there is. At this point we wait until a choose is made. You would think that they would of matched or a deal would of be done by now. However will have to continue to wait. |

I figured it just wasn't permitted. That's too bad. We'll have to live with like 5 year or maybe more like 8 year max deals then.

if that is the compensation, I would want all 4 draft picks back. NSH comes away with the best center prospect they've had since legwand. schenn already shows signs of being much better. |

Nashville has every reason to wait until the 7th day. Think about it, if you decided on day 3 that you were not going to match... wouldnt you want to push back the PR backlash that is sure to follow as much as possible? |

Flyers have ALL the bargaining power here. There is no way the Flyers trade them both Schenns. |

Agreed. We should just do a pool of sorts -have everyone go on record as to their prediction. My guess is that it will be a Gratton deal for jake mezy and 2 firsts. |

Three days or seven days, no difference if Weber is leaving. That PR hit is going to sting. Only think they hold out longer to get more than four picks. |

I won't be confident until I hear Poile announce the decision that the Predators have declined to match. I still see it as a 50-50 proposition, because most of the "news" has been speculation by media that didn't even understand the rules governing the offer sheet process fully.
I was guilty of the same thing on the first night. We all know the reported financials, the stories of the massive loans the team took out over the past few years, the difficulty Nashville faces to ice a competitive team while paying Weber and Rinne. But I wouldn't be surprised at any of the three scenarios we've been discussing happening.
I also wouldn't be surprised if there is a trade that some Flyers fans will be upset at the cost. |
